Analysis of film opening
The setting of this film is in an exterior scene as the boat is sailing out to sea, the year of this year is not clearly specific however the audience is able to work out that the film is not set in the present day as they are travelling on an old-styled ship. The appearance of their clothing also suggests that they could be somewhere in the 18th to 19th century, the clothes of the characters are posh and suggests that they are rich. It is difficult to tell what time of day it is set as the weather is very foggy and dark so it could either be near the evening or it could be daytime around the winter season.
Straight away the audience knows that there is going to be pirates in the film because of the title but also as the young girl is singing a traditional pirate song, this implies that the theme of this film could be an adventure. There are two main possible icons which are the floating umbrella and the gold medallion, the umbrella is a strange object to be floating around in the sea which tells the reader that something from that moment could happen, also the music goes from a light flute sound to a loud dramatic drum noise. The gold medallion appears to be iconic as the whole film has to do with pirates and that this medallion is a symbol of the story starting to get to the main plot.
From the opening scene the audience know that it is going to be focused on the theme of pirates, it is suggested through the characters that are shown that the film's main character could be the young girl, Elizabeth Swan. At the end of the clip it jumps forward a few years to when Elizabeth is older which suggests that the event she was dreaming about is now going to have an impact on her life.
The young girl Elizabeth is one of the main characters introduced in this clip, the audience can presume that she comes from a rich family as her father is in charge of the boat; to contradict this character a young boy who is the complete opposite is also introduced, he appears to be poor from the state of his clothing and also without a family as he was alone in the sea.
The sound plays a big part in creating anticipation for the audience making them want to watch on, this is done by the music increasing it's volume as the bigger events start to occur. The camera has shot the scenes with low-key lighting making the scene create a sense of darkness and mystery, it also implies that the film will not be all cheery and upbeat as other films may be.
